Quick Reference for Family & Team Communications
For licensed GMRS users

Basic Radio Setup (Pre-Use Check)

  • Volume set so all transmissions are clearly audible
  • Correct channel selected
  • Privacy tones verified (if used)
  • Repeater programmed and tested (if using a repeater)
  • Battery charged
  • Antenna secure

Call Signs & Identification

  • Identify at the start and end of communications
  • Identify at least every 15 minutes during extended use
  • Example: “This is WXXX123”

Simplex vs Repeater

  • Simplex: direct radio-to-radio, line-of-sight
  • Repeater: extended range via elevated relay
  • Terrain, buildings, and elevation affect range

Essential Pro-Words

  • Copy – Message received
  • Say again – Repeat message
  • Stand by – Wait
  • Break – Separation in traffic
  • Emergency traffic – Priority transmission

Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Can’t hear ? check volume, channel, tones
  • Can hear but can’t transmit ? battery, PTT
  • Poor signal ? move location, elevate, change channel
  • No response ? switch to backup channel or plan

Legal & Safety Reminder

  • A GMRS license is required for normal operation
  • Identify with your call sign at the start and end of communications, and at least every 15 minutes
  • Emergency communications are permitted when life or property is at risk
  • Follow FCC rules when conditions allow
