Knife - Post-Use Maintenance and Storage - SOP

One-line purpose: Restore a knife to a safe, clean, and protected condition after use to prevent injury, corrosion, or equipment failure.

Quick Orientation

Use this SOP immediately after cutting stops. The goal is to eliminate exposed edge hazard and return the knife to a safe operational condition. Secure first, inspect second, maintain third, and store last. A knife is not finished being used until it is fully secured and protected.

Execution Block

  1. Immediate Blade Control
    1. Stop all blade motion.
    2. Move the knife to a safe carry orientation.
    3. Confirm off-hand is clear of the edge.
    4. Stabilize posture before handling.
  2. Sheathing Procedure
    1. Look the blade into the sheath.
    2. Never re-sheath blindly.
    3. Keep fingers clear of the entry path.
    4. Seat the knife fully and confirm retention.
  3. Temporary Placement (If Not Sheathing)
    1. Place the knife flat on a stable surface.
    2. Orient the edge away from traffic and hands.
    3. Ensure no overhang from edges or surfaces.
    4. Do not leave the knife unattended.
  4. Inspection After Use
    1. Check blade for chips, cracks, or bending.
    2. Check handle for looseness.
    3. Check edge condition.
    4. Check sheath retention and integrity.
  5. Cleaning, Drying, and Protection
    1. Wipe debris from blade and handle.
    2. Remove moisture completely.
    3. Apply a light protective oil or corrosion inhibitor to prevent rust, especially on carbon steel.
    4. Maintain a safe grip during cleaning.
  6. Storage Protocol
    1. Return the knife to its designated storage location.
    2. Use consistent storage habits every time.
    3. Store out of reach of unintended users.
    4. Confirm the knife is fully secured before leaving.

Warnings and Stop Conditions

  • Never pocket an unsheathed blade.
  • Never leave an exposed edge facing upward or toward traffic.
  • Never leave a knife unattended in an active area.
  • Stop if sheath retention or structural integrity is compromised.

Immediate correction rule: Secure blade first, fix environment second.
